KNOW-HOW IN MEASURING TECHNOLOGY
The eye in the storm - glass lined analytical measuring technology
Many processes are simply too stormy for conventional measuring probes - which is a problem, because exact values are a decisive safety factor particularly in these applications.
However, a compound material is available that is both robust and sensitive: Glassed steel made by Pfaudler. Steel makes the probes insensitive to mechanical stress. They are easily capable of coping with high flow velocities, water hammers or pressures up to 100 bar. The Pfaudler glass provides an efficient shield against chemical attack, and the special pH-resistant glass is sufficiently sensitive for supplying exact measured values. Probes made of this material can be positioned in the middle of the process, i.e. inside the reactor or in the main flow line.
This positioning ensures precision without a detour, maximum accuracy of the measured value and - as the probes are practically self-cleaning in the process - maintenance-free operation. The final result is an increase in productivity, product quality and economic efficiency.
MEASURING TECHNOLOGY
Glassed steel is resistant to and neutral in chemical processes, and for this reason the material of choice for measuring applications. Pfaudler measuring probes supply faultless, precise results even under extreme conditions.
- Glassed steel makes Pfaudler probes insensitive to mechanical impacts, such as high flow speeds in reactors and tubes, or high water hammers and pressures up to 100 bar.
- The Pfaudler glass used and the special pH-resistant glass provide efficient protection against chemical attack. In the process itself, glass is absolutely neutral. Catalytic or biological impacts are impossible.
- The smooth glass surface prevents product deposits. Pfaudler probes are self-cleaning.
- Pfaudler probes can be positioned in the middle of the process, i.e. inside the reactor or in the main flow line. These positioning options guarantee accurate measurements without any side-effects and most up-to-date measured values.
- But the Pfaudler probes are not only robust in application, they are also highly responsive when sensing the measured values. No matter which application, it is important that you may always trust the responsiveness of the measuring probes.
- The robust responsiveness of Pfaudler measuring probes pays: Long time intervals between maintenance cycles are synonymous of continuous production, and thus an increased productivity of your system.
pH measurement without any weak points
The problem: A measuring probe is to be both robust and sensitive. The solution: The special pH-sensitive glass used for Pfaudler measuring probes is tough, yet very sensitive when the pH values are to be measured.
The probe has a large surface area that covers the entire perimeter of the lower end of the probe. It is directly exposed to the product flow. A protective cage or similar disturbing equipment can be completely omitted. The probe measures the pH value directly and close to real time.
The glassed measuring electrode is directly connected to its metal conductor. The weak point offered by internal buffers/discharge electrodes is avoided. In contrast to conventional glass electrodes, the pH glass is in contact with the fluid on one side only, because the reference electrode is installed in an electrolyte reservoir separately from the measuring electrode. It is in contact with the medium via an electrolyte and a ground diaphragm. Overpressure in the electrolyte circuit prevents the medium (product) from penetrating the diaphragm or the electrolyte line. Contamination of the reference electrode is entirely excluded.
A commercially available pH transmitter may be connected to the measurement and reference electrodes. The probes have been approved for zone 0 in accordance with certificate of conformity No. Ex88.B.2125X.

PURE PLEASURE: pH Reiner
Broken crockery brings you luck, as the German saying goes - but not in your yoghurt! For this reason, using glass for food production processes is not permitted - despite the excellent chemical properties of glass!
Pfaudler combines the crystal-clear benefits of glass with the tough robustness of hard steel. The unique measuring probes made of glassed steel - e.g. for relative pH measurement - are characterized by safe, reliable operation, an extremely long useful life and optimum sterilization properties. Extremely accurate measured results delivered by these probes are a matter-of-course.
And with the unrivalled service reliability of Pfaudler, your production process becomes a pure pleasure. Now also certified under EHEDG!
pH/rH PROBE
Combined pH/rH probe
By combining two measuring systems on a single probe, it is possible to measure the pH and the redox potential at the same time. The redox potential is measured between a fused-in rhodium electrode and a reference electrode made of pH glass. The size of the potential measured at the reference electrode depends on the product’s pH. Thus, a redox voltage is obtained which is independent of the pH.
- Two functions on one reactor nozzle
- Fused-in rhodium electrode, pH glass - high chemical resistance
- High mechanical strength through use of glassed steel
