CRYO-LOCK / PROSOL
KNOW-HOW IN AGITATING AND MIXING TECHNOLOGY
Glassed steel reactors are chemical process equipment with a long tradition. In the early thirties of the twentieth century, they had already become an important component of many chemical process plants. Glassed steel used to be - and still is - the only means of safely controlling many highly corrosive chemical processes.

Pfaudler was the first manufacturer of glass lined agitators to put the newly invented so-called Cryo-Lock® technology into practice. With the help of this novel, gasket-free, safe and detachable joining technique, most diverse agitators can be obtained on the basis of a standard agitator hub. Each of the turbines has been optimized for one or several agitating tasks, and by combining individual turbines, the agitating process can be further optimized.
Especially for slim reactors (h/D>1.2), multi-step agitators have become increasingly popular recently in order to optimize the agitating processes using different standardized Cryo-Lock® turbines. For typical multi-process plants of the type frequently used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry, for example, a standard configuration that consists of the CBT agitator as the lowest step in connection with one or several TBF/TBX turbines that generate an axial flow has proven to be highly practical.

Continuous innovation by Pfaudler led to the highly efficient agitating systems for glass lined reactors known today. The fact that the agitating systems available nowadays are not meant to be the end of a long, successful chain of innovations was demonstrated again by the development of new glass lined agitating components:
Using the ProSol agitating systems, even extreme agitating tasks can be optimally controlled:
- Optimum mixing of gases and fluids in glass lined reactors
- Optimum mixing of highly viscous media
- Optimum mixing of minimum residual quantities using a special turbine for residual quantities
AGITATING TECHNOLOGY: CRYO-LOCK
“Cold as ice” - the optimum connection Cryo-Lock® is the unique, flexible agitator system made by Pfaudler. With this system, the all-round glass lined agitator shaft is cooled down using liquid nitrogen until the turbine’s all-round glass lined hub can be easily pushed onto or removed from the shaft.
The benefits are obvious:
- Allround glass lined and gasket-free joint between the agitator shaft and the turbine
- The agitator shaft need not be removed for replacing the turbine. This saves valuable time during assembly/disassembly, and thus also cost, of course!
- Cryo-Lock is the solution for reactors where the manhole is the largest opening (BE). But the Cryo-Lock® system may also prove its benefits in all other agitating apparatus.
- Cryo-Lock offers virtually unlimited freedom of design in terms of agitator shapes: The design of single-step and multi-step agitator assemblies is possible. A comprehensive range of standard components ensures high availability and short delivery times
- Turbines with a specific design provide for efficient mixing of minimal residual amounts in the range of a few liters even in large apparatus
Of course, we also design specific, tailor-made agitator shapes for you. Just contact us!
Cryo-Lock agitator systems standard range:
CBT: Curved Blade Turbine Creates a principally radial flow. Particularly suitable for mixing fluids and gases, low-viscosity fluids and for thermal transfer tasks.
CBR: Turbine for residual quantities In connection with an extended shaft, it provides for dramatically small residual amounts that can still be agitated - for example, a minimum volume of approx. 3 liters can still be stirred in a reactor with a volume of 630 liters! The agitating properties are similar to those of a normal CBT turbine.
TBF/TBX Turbofoil Produces a mainly axial flow with low shearing forces. Suitable for all high-flow mixing processes involving low-viscosity fluids, suspension and thermal transfer tasks.
FBT: Flat Blade Turbine Produces principal flows in the radial direction with high shearing forces. Particularly suitable for mixing fluids and gases, low-viscosity fluids and for thermal transfer tasks.
PBT: Pitched Blade Turbine Produces an axial and radial flow. Suitable for suspension, emulsification, mixing low-viscosity fluids and for thermal transfer tasks.
ANC: Anchor-type agitator Produces a mainly tangential flow with low shearing forces. Preferably used for thermal transfer, crystallization processes and for agitating non-Newtonian fluids.

The next generation of agitating systems
A new agitating system was developed in close cooperation with Chemineer, U.S.A., in the course of almost two years of intense development. With its modular design, ProSol offers process optimization and optimum agitating results for a large number of applications. Even agitating tasks which could not be fulfilled by glass lined agitating systems so far can now be solved using ProSol.

Thanks to ProSol, there is hardly any process where you would have to do without the benefits of glassed steel.
- Computer-based engineering and optimization of agitator systems
- Development of new agitating components
- Internal research and development facilities including test laboratory
- Many years of know-how and the experienced team of experts at Pfaudler
- Highest demands on quality assurance - the FDA requirements are necessarily complied with
- Optimum solutions, e.g., for mixing, heat transfer, stirring residual amounts, gas dispersion, mixing high viscosity substances, suspension of solids, emulsification
New agitating components:
MXT Maxflo-Turbine A high-performance agitator for mixing substances with a higher viscosity or for agitating tasks that cannot be fulfilled by traditional high-performance agitators.

GST Gas dispersion turbine Superior homogeneity and considerable increase in gas quantities for dispersion and transition regime rates compared to a disk-type agitator.
MSG TURBINE The Pfaudler MSG turbine was specifically developed to improve the agitating performance in the transition zone between laminar and turbulent flow conditions. Certain applications, such as agitating processes in small reactors as well as stirring non-Newtonian fluids benefit from the unique advantages of the MSG design.
AGITATORS: CLASSIC IMPELLERS/ANCHOR-TYPE AGITATORS
Proven a thousand times - the classic Pfaudler agitators in one-piece design:
Impeller Versatile universal agitator. Creates a principally radial flow. Insensitive to changes in viscosity. Suitable for small filling levels.
Anchor-type agitator Produces a mainly tangential flow with low shearing forces. Preferably used for thermal transfer, crystallization processes and for agitating non-Newtonian fluids.
- Closed glass lined surface - turbine and shaft are made “by one cast”, no joints, no product deposits
- Being a compound material, glassed steel can stand high temperature differences, offers high resistance to pressure and an optimum chemical resistance
Due to the availability of the proven Cryo-Lock® technology, however, these agitators are increasingly losing their significance.
