Alcali resistant glass 4300

Alkali-resistant Pfaudler Glass 4300

Soft soda glass and glass qualities used for chemical apparatus are characterized by excellent resistance to acids due to their structural properties. For this reason, they are mainly used in acid protection. Resistance to alkalis is a natural asset of the metallic reactor materials, therefore, alkali protection is their principal field of application. As a result of many decades of development activities, these boundaries have largely become flexible.

Pfaudler glass WWG and PPG
is characterized by a fairly high resistance to alkalis, without impairing its extreme resistance to acids. It has ideal properties for the traditional use of glass, preferably in the strong acid range with occasional neutralization and intermittent alkali operations.

Pfaudler Glass 4300Storage Tank
breaks this tradition. This glass has been designed to close a gap. Its focus in application technology is on its resistance to alkalis. Pfaudler Glass 4300 is recommended if alkali environments prevail, or if high concentrations or temperatures temporarily increase the alkali attack.

It is also advisable to use Glass 4300 if one of the following conditions is present:

  • Protection of alkali products against metallic contamination.
  • Risk that alkali products may change in color by taking up metals.
  • Stabilization of highly molecular alkalis sensitive to metal contact.
  • Insufficient reduction-oxidation resistance of the reactor material in the alkali range.

Anhydrous organic alkalis and organometallic compounds are not to be treated as alkalis for the purpose of glass corrosion. WWG and Glass 4300 can be equally used without any restrictions. As long as it remains in the scope of customary contamination, a certain amount of water does not affect this property.

Compared to WWG, Glass 4300 is characterized by a 30% higher resistance to alkalis. This means higher working temperatures, or a longer useful life under otherwise identical conditions. Please refer to the new resistance diagrams for sodium hydroxide and carbonate, potassium hydroxide and ammonia in our publication 614 (Pfaudler materials).

The acid resistance of Glass 4300 amounts to 60 % of that of WWG. For its thermal capacity, refer to publication 303.

Glass 4300 is a special glass quality, i.e. it is not applied to series parts, and is not kept on stock. It is distinguished from other qualities by its light blue color pigments.
